Do spices play a significant role in our life?

It’s well known that “Variety is the Spice of life”, but do we know what role do these variety of spices play in our life?

In this era of ultra-modern cooking, spices have always played a dominant and multi-functional role. When it comes to taste, health and quality of Indian food, these fragrant spices lifts your mood to cook and serve better. However, they play a critical role in our life. Where Ayurveda, has segmented the use of spices, in a correct proportion, as per our health conditions, the astrologers also recommend consumption of spices which has a direct relation with our zodiac sign. Here are some spices which are directly proportional to our healthy life  and at the same time maintains the cooking standards.

RICH INDIAN SPICES
Cumin seeds (Jeera): It is one of the typical spices found in every household kitchen used widely for preparing curries, stews and Indian bread (parathas, naan etc). Apart from adding flavor to these dishes, it serves as a medicine, good for weight loss, treating liver problems, common cold, and immunity.

Carom Seeds (Ajwain):  We all remember the crispy fried puris with a pinch of carom seeds usually cooked for Sunday’s meal. These are most effective for increasing digestive enzymes, remove gastric and acidity disorders. It also helps in getting rid of alcohol addiction, if consumed on a regular basis after meal.


Turmeric (Haldi): The uses of turmeric dates back to centuries. It is one of the major spices in the kitchen used in almost every Indian dish. Apart from making food tastier, it is usually used as an antiseptic (applied on cuts), and cures respiratory and stomach disorders.  

Coriander seeds (Dhania): Coriander seeds are an indispensible part of Indian dishes. Especially used for non- vegetarian cuisines, this particular spice is useful in hair growth, rectifying skin diseases, and in seasonal cough and cold.

Fenugreek seeds (Methi): One of the must-have spices in every Indian kitchen is the fenugreek seeds. It gives an intense flavor to every dish and makes Indian bread fresh to taste. But very few of us know that it acts as a medicine in case of mild fever, throat infection and reduces bad cholesterol level, making heart healthy and strong.

Cloves (Laung): Used for the strong flavor in major rice and curry dishes, cloves are an essential part of Indian food. With immense nutritional benefits, its medicinal value is used in curing dental problems, improving immunity, and for stronger bones.

Bay Leaf (Tej Patta): Used either in the whole form or in a powdered way, bay leaves have an intensive flavor to make any recipe taste appetizing and yummy. Its medicinal values include protection from bacterial infection, aging, and enhance the digestive system for better immunity. Last But Not the Least………………..

Garam Masala:  It’s a blend of all the hot spices listed above. They are roasted in a hot pan for few minutes, then cooled down to room temperature, and thereafter ground to a powdered texture.  It is the God of spices which give a pungent flavor to all Indian recipes and at the same time breaks down the food for better digestion.
